I can understand French people being frightened and angry after the recent outrages, but shouldn't what people wear or don't wear be their own business? If you don't like what you see, look the other way. All these bans are doing is preventing the wives and daughters of pathetic god-ridden, Muslim control freaks from taking a swim.
Why are religious people so afraid of the human body? Isn't it the supreme masterpiece of their imaginary friend? A long time ago I heard a story from someone who'd been raised by nuns in a catholic orphanage. She was forced to wear a nightgown when taking a bath, and she asked a nun why she had to cover up when there was no-one else in the bathroom who could see her. "But the good lord can see you," was the explanation. She said she thought of god as the great peeping Tom in the sky after that.
I guess if god wanted us to be naked, we'd have been born naked, right?

Nice post! By the way, the story about that nun came from Bertrand Russell.
Really? So god likes to peep at little boys, too.

France has laws enforcing a secular society. I do not agree but it is up to the French to alter their constitution.
These latest bans were enforced locally by mayors, not by the central government. In a country that dedicated itself to liberty, equality and fraternity (mutually exclusive goals, BTW), I would have thought that people would be free to wear what they want. I thought the wearing of religious garb and symbols was only outlawed in government buildings, such as public schools. But it seems liberty is conditional in France. Bans only reinforce the paranoia and resentment of the minority concerned, especially since christian nuns are still allowed to walk around in their habits and priests can wear dog collars.
One way or another, the terrorists and fanatics are eroding our freedom with our collusion.
I Agree with chimp3 that the government should not push a secular agenda to determine what people can and cannot wear. Its the same as religious edicts.
I understand that unveiling helps identify people and is needed but in general to outlaw a garb is going a bit extreme.
However recently I have seen a lot of talk about how islamic women have been liberated by the burkha and veil and how they chose to wear it. Now thats just brainwashed nonsense. Its gotten bad that people believe that their chains are their mark of freedom and that living in their tiny cell is actually their choice rather than sentence.
In short I would rather that women discard the veil and do so at their own accord rather than be forced by government but maybe that is wishful thinking. Its just that I fear such laws may cause the polarised to become more extreme
P.s.: Autocorrect changed 'veil' to 'view'. sorry for that
"In short I would rather that women discard the view and do so at their own accord rather than be forced by government but maybe that is wishful thinking."
Perhaps without the assistance of the government they would never be able to do so. So many women are forced into this bullshit modesty. They cannot discard it of their own accord without dangerous repercussions.
I dont know... But maybe they are afraid of sex or they have poor self control?
