It would be great if the forums at least were on an app, with notifications for replies. Is that a possibility?

We just finished up working

We just finished up working on email subscriptions to forum threads. You should be able to see subscription options under the first post in the thread now. There are also subscription options that you will want to change in your account settings to receive notifications right away (defualt they are set to once a day). I'm currently working on more detailed instructions which I hope to post soon.
