Ahhh, Tinny... the “mix” is through every land. And in us. I’ve been as stupid and ignorant in some areas as I’ve been smart and informed.
Anyway...”daydreaming” comment of where you may have been had you not met your wife (I agree with Grinseed) - I was on a fast track to international project management and had my eye on a sweet spot of educating/establishing small business loans in 3rd world countries for women.
The imagination of “what could have been” is always sweeter than reality, another form of mind-candy :)
Edited to add...I love sloths

Basically we're atheist because we don't see any proof there is any kind of a god. I am a former Christian so I can understand where you are coming from. I placed a lot of faith into my religion for a pretty long time. At least up until I began research on the matter, and stopped being so closed minded. Did you know there's over 3200 known religions in the world?
That's a lot of gods for just the number of religions but some believe there's many gods controlling everything. It's their beliefs, and there's too many of them. I went the one and only way which no one else seems to go much and that's atheist even if they can scientifically prove some sort of god exists. So far there's no scientific or physical proof of such, and by now there would be.
Yes many scientific discoveries have been made, but a god of some sort isn't one of them.
If you are interested. I will you the details for next Thursday at 7:30 EST. It's a great time. You will love it.
I was thinking last night... how long did it go? How do 30-40 people get to discuss anything (overtalking, interrupting, staying on topic) ? Is this an online “church meeting”?
It went well. More people than last time. We split in groups. In my group we had all types of people with different beliefs and at different places. There were atheists, agnostics, Christians, regular theists, LGBT, etc. Everyone was respectful and listened. Many opened deep. There is a host for every group. He opened the floor with questions, then would allow people to speak. When the conversation slowed down he asked another question. It's not a church meeting. My friend Jay who is an agnostic was a host for the last season it. It was a great discussion and Christians to listen. I strongly believe that you will love it. I will keep you updated on the next event this Thursday.
Sounds great. Would love to join next time. Thanks.
Great I will send you the zoom id next week and keep you updated on it. Looking forward to having you.
Hey, this is a reminder as you were interested. The Zoom event will start tomorrow at 7:30 EST. Would love for you to join. Let me know if you want the zoom details to join.
Your friend Joe does not know what an Agnostic is. Labeling one's self as Agnostic is just ignorant. Agnosticism says NOTHING AT ALL ABOUT BELIEF. It does not respond to the question of BELIEF in any way. Agnosticism is about KNOWLEDGE.
You either BELIEVE a God exists or you do not BELIEVE a God exists. It is a single question and either God exists or God does not exist.
You either KNOW (Have Knowledge) about this god or you do not (Have knowledge) about this god. A = without Gnosis = Knowledge. Many people who believe in God or gods do so without any knowledge at all. "God can not be known" (How they profess to even know that is beyond me.) All you need do is look at Pascal's Wager for evidence of the Agnostic Theist. "It is better to believe in a god than to not believe in a god, whether or not you KNOW that god exists. You gain everything and lose nothing. *At least according to the wager.*)
Both Atheists and Theists can be AGNOSTICS. This makes your friend Joe a wimpy liar who is opting for a middle ground because he is not man enough or intelligent enough to look at his own belief system and make a determination. You either believe in the existence of a god or you do not.
TELL HIM I SAID SO!
If your friend wants to be honest, he can admit that he is "CONFUSED!" He can admit that he does not know what he "BELIEVES." He can admit that sometimes he believes that some kind of god exists and sometimes he thinks the idea of God is silly. He can not both believe in a god and believe in no god at the same time. That is "cognitive dissonance." SO WHAT DOES JOE BELIEVE? "AGNOSTIC is not a possible answer to the question." When this is the response to "What do you believe" it is weaselly at least and an outright lie at most.
It went for about an hour. About a 15 minute vid, knowing what it is about and watching skeptics give their takes on things. Then being transported to groups and talking. Then Uber Eats gift card prizes announcements at the end. Overall fun time and it's building relationships and helps others to really put down walls and listen. It's a safe place, that's why it's so awesome.
@James Hart.
I ask again; who are you? Please give us a a bit about yourself and your own basic positions say about god and christianity.
I'm afraid I get a bit suspicious when some one Who doesn't know me sayI will love something. As it turns out, one of my many flaws is social anxiety, which means I'm very uncomfortable around people I don't know.
Perhaps try not to assume, there's a good chap.
My opinion about great free apps stands,
Hey, no problem. My background is Christianity. I believe in God. I'm one of the helpers in the meeting, but not the host. Don't worry I'm super kind. I have social anxiety as well so I totally understand. Believe me. It is a safe place. I want you to join again so I would not lie to you. The environment is cool and comfortable. No opposition. No talking over others. A good way to express yourself, your concerns, and be heard and loved. Relationships are built. It's really awesome. Great interesting conversation and a lot of fun.
@James
Hey there. As I and others have already said, the meetings sound interesting. And, given that I am available, I may actually give it a go one night just to check it out. That being said, I hope you don't mind a bit of critiquing on your "sales pitch."
While I do admire your enthusiasm, in all honesty you present yourself almost as some sort of manic ad-bot. You keep harping on and on about it being "a safe space free from judgement and opposition." Part of that does not even make sense, in case you haven't noticed. For one, why should I (or anybody else) be concerned about a group of strangers casting judgement upon me? Quite frankly, aside from my wife, her kids, and a small handful of close friends, I couldn't care less what anybody thinks about me. Also, if there is no "opposition" on the meeting site, what is the purpose of the discussions? Everybody just sits around sharing recipes and fishing tips? If you expect any of us here to believe there is no opposition between theism and atheism, then I'm afraid I have to question anybody who is that naive. As for it being a "safe space", does that mean I have to wear a safety pin on my shirt pocket? I mean, it is a video conference. How could I be in danger? Somebody in my group gonna threaten to sneeze on me, or maybe show a naked pic of Queen Elizabeth?... *shudder*...
Bottom line, dude, start talking to us like a human rather than some sort of spam-bot. A couple of folks have already asked quite nicely for you to tell us a little about yourself to engage in a normal conversation. We've all seen your spiel already. No need to repeat it again. Take a deep breath, calm down a little, and just chat normally. You will find you will likely get better results that way.
Ohhhh Tinman...

@White
Reminds me of a birthday card I sent to a very close female*** friend. The card had a woman like the one in your picture you on a pole in a nightclub. She was hanging upside down, topless.----- There's a bloke looking bored looking on. The caption reads;
"NEXT!"
Our birthdays are 3 weeks apart. In response she sent me card of a middle aged couple at restaurant:
Waiter: " --and for the vegetable?"
Wife/companion : "He'll have the same"
I should add that ours was not a typical friendship. More your raving codependency .
**my fried's boobs were like that at at 35.
@Whitefire Re: Pic
Well, damn.... So much for THIS SITE being a safe space... *throwing hands up in exasperation*.... I'm gonna call my therapist now... *stumbling away toward phone*...
Thank you for your critique. I will take that in. Much appreciate and will let you know more.
Is this like debate or AA (where everyone shares & supports) ... do you have a clip,
Say YouTube or something to listen to, to get a better idea...
I don't have a clip but it's not like a debate. It can be, but everyone share and listens to other people's perspectives. You don't have to agree and you chime in the discussion.
@ James, ok, forgive my initial cynicism, but now that you have given some background to these Zoom meetups, it does sound to be an interesting format for discussion.
I want you know I wont be attending any because I am deaf. I cant use any of the conference apps. I am limited to text coms like this forum. But I look forward to reading comments of those from AR who can attend about their experience.
Thanks for the invite. Cheers.
Also smiling bird feed isn’t safe... that squawker shits!
@whitefire
"Also smiling bird feed isn’t safe... that squawker shits!"
I don't understand the reference.
Here in spring, nesting magpies get very aggressive and will attack humans, like little dive bombers. There's a simple solution; put down something for them to eat each time you pass, . Magpies are wicked smart and are not going to hurt anyone who gives them food . ( I once saw a magpie with a broken beak using a stick to dig for worms)
The piping shrike is a more refined looking magpie and state emblem of South Australia.Our state flower is the Sturt Desert Pea.
Our animal emblem is the Hairy Nosed Wombat. As with virtually all Australian native animals, it has no natural predators. Thus it makes the average sheep seem intellectually gifted. Much like Donald Trump and most Aussie parliamentary back benchers .
I am "smiling bird seed".
Safe? I am an environmental threat.
I not only shit (from great heights) I bite as well. Beware!_ Squawk!
No worries, That's great. I'm going to post right after to see how everyone liked it.
Re use of Zoom: If you are going to join an open chat use a VPN to mask your IP.
If you do not your details can be tracked. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/04/the-zoom-app-has-a-lot-of-securi...
Zoom is malware; imo.
@Nyar Re: "Zoom is malware; imo."
Whoops. Looks like I won't be attending any mettings. Thanks for the heads-up.
Personally, being a technoignoramus I’d trust Nyar’s opinion, so I won’t be in ...
Well in all fairness; supposedly the makers of Zoom have been working like the devil (due to how useful it is during this epidemic) to put in some rudimentary security in their software. How serious they are this time around, or how much success they've had is unknown to me. It was certainly dogshit in the recent past.
@ Nyar
Agreed the only way I would use open chat Zoom at the moment is with Tor running over a VPN.......they have been falling over themselves at zoom to issue "security" updates but I am not so trusting......
