We know they are there because we can detect evidence for the process or the item. Where is the clear evidence for God? In any case, an argument for God must supply evidence for his existence. That we can't see some things is just totally, freakin irrelevant for establishing that something else exists. Gee! Don't see anything in this room. Therefore, an invisible Easter Bunny must be in there!

Parapsychology? Despite years of work, it has never passed the scientific test. All kinds of problems (including skilled cheaters who made fools of the naive investigators) have cropped up in parapsychology labs, testing procedures, and data analysis.

Parapsychology..... Hmmmm.... Would that be like having a therapy session while skydiving?...*scratching chin*..... Well, while I agree it could be an interesting concept, I can definitely foresee a few basic problems.

1. For starters, the couch. It would have to be rigged with a chute. Not that big a deal, really. I'm quite confident I could do that easily enough. Still, it is a detail that must be considered. Then one must consider: Use an ADD, or just have the patient deploy the chute manually?

2. Communication between patient and counsellor: Contrary to the typical Hollywood portrayal, having a conversation while in freefall is basically a no-go. Just ain't happenin'. And call me crazy, but it seems to me clear communications would be a must during a therapy session.

3. Duration of session. Simply put.... Not long. Look at it this way. Typical jump altitude at most DZ's is between fourteen thousand and fifteen thousand feet. Now, general rule of thumb is ten seconds for first thousand feet out of plane, and then six seconds per every thousand feet after that. Typical chute deployment altitude is usually three thousand feet. It varies, of course, but we will use 15k and 3k feet for ease of calculation. That gives us twelve thousand feet of freefall, right? So, ten seconds for the first thousand feet, then sixty six seconds for the remaining eleven thousand, gives us seventy six seconds of freefall.

But, wait! We have to consider the couch. Whether an ADD is used or not, the patient will still need to get clear of it before being able to deploy his/her chute. That means the session would have to end at roughly four thousand feet, taking six seconds off the session time. Oh, and depending on how skilled the patient is, it will take at least ten seconds (or more) after exiting the aircraft to dock with the couch and get comfy. Then you have to hope the therapist is in place by then, too. So, basically, even under ideal conditions, you are looking at maybe one minute of therapy time. Again, call me crazy, but that just doesn't seem like enough time to solve any emotional/psychological issues.

I could discuss several other little problems such as type of aircraft required, couch recovery crews, extreme extra costs, and so forth, but I think you get the idea. Honestly, although it would definitely be a cutting-edge form of patient therapy (Not to mention a blast! Woo-hoooo!), I just don't see where Parapsychology would be very practical or effective. Just a personal opinion, though.

This is my favorite study on the subject. It's controversial due to it's results changing depending on whether one uses Bayesian statistics or not. It's one of those things that remind us that science is a highly interpretive process
