"I don’t believe god inflicts anything on the world, no more than Sasquatch leaves a big pile of shit near the chicken coop ..."***
Me neither.
Apropos; A few years ago I finally had a thought about bigfoot, the yeti and the like. Sightings continue, so relatively young creatures. .Where are the breeding populations needed for such a creature to survive and why don't we ever hear of family groups being sighted? Photos too hard to fake ?
**as the saying goes "Does the pope shit in the woods and are bears catholic?" Something like that.
@Relative Truth: So a god, has somehow injected a virus onto the World.
For those in Korea, the god who unleashed this disease is Jesus. He also goes by name of Lee-man Hee. I've attached his picture.
In addition to the power to spread a virus, this man also apparently has the uncanny power to take away people's common sense and money.

People have common sense? When did this happen?
@Sheldon.
You're right. My bad.
Here's a couple of videos showing one species of primate behaving with a semblance of logic, and another driven to insanity by uncontrollable instincts.

@Algebe
Went shopping earlier this week, and was appalled at the rank stupidity and selfishness on display. I experience the same years ago when the UK experienced a fuel crisis. We need rationing and maybe even martial law if supermarket outlets can't stop people behaving irresponsibly. To be honest I see it once every year in the run up to the xmas holidays, when people seem determined to buy more food than they need for a month, for a public holiday that lasts just two fucking days.
I try to remember the Latin adage nil desperandum, but sometimes human behaviour makes it difficult. When this happens I remind myself that we are just one species of evolved ape, it helps quelle my disappointment.
@Algebe
I saw the toilet paper thing at my own supermarket.
Trying to be responsible by shopping very early or after 7pm.
Needed toilet paper as I was down to the last roll. Shelves almost empty ,found the pack of six I wanted. A woman went rushing by, her trolley full of perhaps 50 rolls .
Also wanted rolled oats, as I was was almost out . Empty shelves for my usual brand .All they had left was Uncle Toby's at nearly double the price. I have tried it, I prefer the cheaper brand. Decided I could eat Weetbix instead, or toast, or eggs, ------
Thinking about going to the supermarket again tomorrow morning.Or not.
Wouldn't want to be a human holding a piece of fruit near those monkeys at the best of times -------
Addendum ; If I run out of toilet paper, I'lll use tissues, or failing that , old socks. Using my fingers would be icky is but not the end of the world.
@ Cranky
Woolworths have announced early morning shopping for seniors and disabled. 7am to 8am. So us old farts get best pickings on the toilet roll aisle...
@ Old man
I am sure you can find some desperate fools willing to pay you cash so you can beat the rush and buy toilet paper for them.
I can see it now, dozens of senior waiting for the stores to open, buying toilet paper, then once outside handing it off to a waiting car.
Nod nod wink wink
In my area, everyone so far is being responsible (so far). Grocery shelves are decent. People putting a few extras in the cart.. Tp on the shelves - self isolating and lots of contingency information. Financial aid to those in need that need to isolate...
The only extra (aside from a few extra pastas and cans) was “squirt bottles”. Bidet anyone?!? Just in case. I’m more nervous of people reacting/hoarding...
I guess I'm very lucky. By a comedy of errors (all before the virus, and nothing to do foresight) I am pretty well stocked up on essentials that are missing from the stores.
Also a tip: put the rampant anti-Asian racism to work for you; if you can't find something you need, check the local Asian grocery stores (if you have some near you). Those places are ghosts towns in my limited experience here. That is where I finally got some of that major brand of soda my wife has been fiending.
I bet a lot of money, that 2 weeks from now there is going to be huge amounts of tp on the shelves of just about every supermarket in the world, and no one buying them. There is a temporary shortage of TP on the shelves of some stores right now, but beyond fear, there is zero reason to expect an increase in demand on TP. More people will be at home more, slightly increasing tp needs at home, but there should be a corresponding decrease in TP needed at office spaces and public venues.
At the rate things are going I might end up teaching algebra to neighborhood kids in the front yard, and handing out homemade bread and toilet paper to them.
Nyar...schools are shut down. Boys “yahhh!”. Me “uh, we homeschool”. Boys “ohhhhh :(“
Right now we are experiencing a temporary panic. Obviously.
The main goal on travel restrictions and everything else is to slow down the spread of the virus, so that the health services do not get overwhelmed. Only when the vaccine is developed and distributed can this virus be properly attacked and defeated.
May go shopping tonight, just for a laugh. All I really need is vodka, though I may buy some milk and toilet rolls....ahahahahahahahahahahaha, and some fucking pasta, ahahahahahahah...
Seriously do toilet rolls and pasta lend some sort of fucking immunity to this virus? I mean how fucking stupid are these cretins. If you hole up at home in the hope of not getting it, going to a fucking supermarket checkout is akin to snogging a few hundred random strangers on the street.
With a 95% shot at surviving it I refuse to fucking panic, and I die I've cut my soon to be ex wife entirely out of my will. So she can pick through that if she survives.
The local Indian takeaway are still delivering, and Dominos pizza, the Chinese takeaway can't give their food away, which is both fucking hilarious and sad.
People is dumb!
@ Sheldon
"All I really need is vodka"
Here in Toronto they deliver within an hour.

@David Killens
I may emigrate when this is all over. Assuming I have a pot to piss in after the divorce, or window to throw it out of.
Imagine the panic buyer, in a few weeks, safe with their stash.
Self isolating,
With loads of pasta and tinned vegetables.
Tinned has a higher salt content than fresh so your blood pressure is going to go up.
Just as well that you have loads of paracetamol which can help reduce your temperature.
I don't know about you but if I eat loads of pasta without fresh vegetables I tend to get a bit bunged up.
So why would you need lots of rolls of toilet paper?
LOL _ I coughed on the bus today! Here in Korea, every single person on the street is wearing a mask. Today I was sitting on the bus with two other teachers when I accidentally coughed. (The pollution is really bad and yellow dust flows over here from China clouding the air. A brown haze was between me and the mountains and they are within walking distance.)
Anyway, as soon as I coughed, "Shit! Virus!" I exclaimed. Loud enough for the three seats of Koreans around me to hear. I refuse to wear one of those fucking masks. 1. They are not the proper masks for virus. 2. Virus can enter the body through the masks, being only 100 nano-grams. 3. Virus can enter through our eyes. 4. Sick people need the masks. 5. Wearing the mask actually increases the chance of catching the virus as people are putting the same masks on and off throughout the day. (In the coffee shop, for example, they take them off, put them on the table while they drink their coffee and then put them on again before they leave. WHAT IN THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE!!!!
Oh.... Back to the story...... sorry. So, my fellow foreigners, also not wearing masks in this busload of Koreans with covered faces, tried to stifle their laughter. The Koreans shot me looks like I had just killed their first born child and I just had to blurt out, "It's not my fault they don't know what a virus is!" One lady locked eyes with me and if looks could kill, my head would have exploded covering everyone in virus tainted blood. Lucky we were close to my stop. The bus stopped. I gave everyone a cheery "See you tomorrow." and then a little fake cough as I exited. I am sure I ruined about 6 lives on my way home today.

Ohfuck LOL @David. My middle one said “the Coronavirus is the least of that kid’s worries....”
You know, meaning the adults in their lives...
@Whitefire Re: David's vid link
... *chuckle*... Sadly, I actually KNOW people just like some of those parents... *shaking head in dismay*...
Hmm, I have some garbage bags and plastic bags from shopping, as well as duct tape. Maybe I should bag up and go wander outside, just to see people's reactions.
But what if I start a trend?
Seriously though, I would not because that just feeds into the panic. But it is VERY tempting .....................
@DAVID: Ha ha ha ha ha .... People are stupid!
Going back to percentages. I heard a bit of a Sam Harris podcast yesterday. He had on an expert in infectious diseases from Johns Hopkins, sorry his name escapes me.
His theory it that the upper range of fatalities is .6%. He based this on the experience in South Korea which has done the most extensive testing. Even there, he still believes the denominator of how many have actually "attained" (to use the famous Magic Johnson vernacular) the virus to be much higher so that he believe the real fatality rate is closer to .1%.
Take that for what you will, but it's the best reasoning I've heard thus far.
@ New Skeptic
0.6% or 6%?
My guess .006 or, 0.6%
I suspect in a healthy'ish' society that is about the rate to expect.
It really depends on the circumstances. A hospice? Expect 10-20% death rates in an outbreak there.
Mountain communities of colorado? Expect a .03 death rate there, or lower. (Some of the healthiest populations in the world.)
Both the above numbers assume that availability of medical aid, including respirators. Without medical intervention I would say double or triple those numbers.
.6, 6 out of a thousand
Statistics are interesting, but as an individual, they don’t mean a ton to me. Each of us will fall on one side of the line or the other, whether it’s 1% or 75%. It seems to me, the only thing stats do is to instill feelings - fear or security.
