Christianity and Magic

If Christianity is allowed to be real, so then all forms of magic should be allowed to exist too. Considering there's no such thing as magic, there can not be Christianity either.

Anyone else agree?

Allowed to be accepted as

Allowed to be accepted as real? Who decides what is to be allowed? The Pope, Trump, Putin, world leaders, a vote?

History has proven that thought police is ineffective, immoral, and counter-productive.

IMO education in the sciences, teaching children to be skeptical, and being able to distinguish reality against fantasy would lead society in a positive direction and future.

Fievel Mousekewitz I suspect I agree with the OP, but the proposition is fuzzy and I am not clear on the exact intent of your post.

@Fievel Re: "Considering there's no such thing as magic..."

Oh, but there IS such a thing as magic. Haven't you ever watched "Penn & Teller's Fool Us"? There are some absolutely TERRIFIC magic acts performed on that show... *chuckle*... In that same respect (sadly) Christianity is very real also. Billions of people across the globe practice Christianity and perform its rituals every single day. Same with Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, and all the other thousands of religious practices out there. All of those belief systems are (unfortunately) very real. And that is true regardless of whether or not "magic" is real. Now, granted, I sorta-kinda see where you are trying to go with that. However, you first need to define what you mean by "magic", and then you have to understand we cannot simply wish or define away religion. Would be great if it were that easy, of course, but I'm afraid it is not.

@Fievel Mousekewitz:

@Fievel Mousekewitz: Christianity IS magic. It is based on the magical resurrection of a dead man who magically healed the blind by spitting in their eyes, magically cured a man of demons by sending the demons into a herd of pigs and sending them over a cliff, magically walks on water, magically turns water into wine, and who magically feeds a multitude with loaves and fished. Christianity where magic rituals like prayer can get you anything you want, where having the faith of a mustard seed can move a mountain, where whenever two or more of you are gathered in his name miracles can occur. Where in the fuck do you see magic not occurring in the Christian faith. The term Christian and magic are nearly synonymous. The big difference is that when we read books about magic or go to a magic show. we know it is fantasy. When the ignorant go to Church. they all pretend the magic show is real.

Magicians can't be trusted.

Magicians can't be trusted.
Their intent is to make you doubt your senses and reason.
Christians try to do that too but they aren't as entertaining.

Wait, you've made a confusing

Wait, you've made a confusing correlation:

If Christianity is true, then magic exists too.

But since magic does not exist, Christianity is also not real.

Therefore, Christianity is not real.

------

Well, maybe you should improve the structure of your argument because to someone who is not a Christian or has not studied the Bible deeply, like me, would be utterly confused between the connection of Christianity and magic.

Try this format:

Since Christianity is a man-made religion, and this is supported by reasons X, Y, Z
And
Since most of the claims of Christianity depend on magical thinking, as supported by reference A, B, C, evident in D, E, F chapters of the Bible

Therefore, magical thinking is also hopeless as is magic in its entirety.

"If Christianity is allowed

"If Christianity is allowed to be real, so then all forms of magic should be allowed to exist too.

According to the bible opposing forms of magic do exist, read the account of Moses going before Pharaoh, and competing magic tricks with the Egyptians.

In the 21st century, it's a sad indictment of our species we still cling to such risible superstition.

I was just trying to say

I was just trying to say neither can be real as both are fantasy. Of course people believe in both, as that's the way this world is. I wish true magic could for real exist like in Harry Potter, but none of it is actually real. So both are just fantasy.

Congratulations, you have done an informal fallacy-
Premise 1- If A is true, then B is true.
Premise 2- A is true
Fallacious conclusion- B is true.
P.s. Paul's Jesus was too innocent that his miracle never worked on anyone XD.

Vex Man - All premises must be true for drawing a true conclusion.

The validity of an argument, is NOT determined by the truthfulness of its premises. I know it is hard for some people to accept that (it seems counter-intuitive at first).

Maybe it is just splitting hairs; but the argument you posted is valid (it does not contain a fallacy).

The validity of an argument relies on truthfulness of its premises otherwise the conclusion will always be false.

> but the argument you posted is valid (it does not contain a fallacy)

The argument I posted was formally valid, not informally valid. Since premise 2 asserts a claim, it must have abundant evidences or it is false. In other words, absence of evidence is evidence of absence.

> I know it is hard for some people to accept that

An argument is formally (not informally) valid even if its any premise is not true. Unsound arguments generally fall in informal fallacious arguments. An argument is unsound when its premises are not true.
I am quoting from Stanford now-
"an argument is valid if and only if it is necessary that if all of the premises are true, then the conclusion is true; if all the premises are true, then the conclusion must be true; it is impossible that all the premises are true and the conclusion is false."

That just isn't the case; I don't know what else to tell you, other than to say your misconception of how logic works is a common misconception I've seen dozens of students struggle with. It is extremely counter-intuitive.

Vex Man "Congratulations, you have done an informal fallacy-
Premise 1- If A is true, then B is true.
Premise 2- A is true
Fallacious conclusion- B is true."

What informal fallacy are you claiming he has used? You also seem to have omitted the word "if" from premise 2, so have created a straw man fallacy. It seems perfectly rational to me, that if one form of unevidenced magic is permitted to be true, then there is no rational basis to deny any others. This argument doesn't necessitate the need that premise 2 is true, only that if it is true, the conclusion the arguments draws is rational.

Vex Man: "In logic, more precisely in deductive reasoning, an argument is valid if and only if it takes a form that makes it impossible for the premises to be true and the conclusion nevertheless to be false.[1] It is not required for a valid argument to have premises that are actually true,[2] but to have premises that, if they were true, would guarantee the truth of the argument's conclusion. Valid arguments must be clearly expressed by means of sentences called well-formed formulas (also called wffs or formulas). The validity of an argument can be tested, proved or disproved, and depends on its logical form."

Why would you argue without first doing a simple Google search? Some people make no sense at all.

Are you sure that someone could quote a philosophical article without doing Google search? Second, Wikipedia is not a philosophical encyclopedia, it is just an encyclopedia. This is a list of philosophical encyclopedias- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy_encyclopedia. Stanford is one of the five philosophical encyclopedias. Third, Wikipedia is not as authentic as Britannica is. In fact, Wikipedia comes at no.9 and Britannica comes at no.1. Top encyclopedias for research papers- https://study.com/articles/Top_Encyclopedia_Sites_for_Student_Research_P.... Fourth, I quote from Britannica now-
"Validity, In logic, the property of an argument consisting in the fact that the truth of the premises logically guarantees the truth of the conclusion. Whenever the premises are true, the conclusion must be true, because of the form of the argument. Some arguments that fail to be valid are acceptable on grounds other than formal logic (e.g., inductively strong arguments), and their conclusions are supported with less than logical necessity. Where the support yields high probability of the conclusion relative to the premises, such arguments are sometimes called inductively valid. In other purportedly persuasive arguments, the premises actually provide no rational grounds for accepting the conclusion; such defective forms of argument are called fallacies (see fallacy, formal and informal)."

Every source that has been discussed (Wikipedia, Stanford's Philosophy Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Britannica) disagrees with what you have told us. Every class on logic I've ever taken disagrees with what you've told us. Every class I've taught on the subject, disagrees with what you have told us:

Vex Man - The validity of an argument relies on truthfulness of its premises...

It is something that is counter-intuitive enough that most people get it wrong the first time they encounter it, myself included. But when it's evolved to the point where someone is citing sources that disagree with themselves, I have to wonder if we are dealing with the Dunning-Kruger effect?

Every source that I have cited, agrees with me. You just quoted half statement of mine and then try to argue with me. If any philosophical encyclopedia states 'an argument containing begging the question fallacy is a valid argument', you may show it to me.

> But when it's evolved to the point where someone is citing sources that disagree with themselves,

If you think the sources that I have given, disagree with me, then you are either ignoring the sources or not reading anyone of them. It is too easy to ignore sources and make assertions without a rational ground. You are making assertions in air and rejecting my arguments without explaining anything.
A simple question to you- is an unsound argument valid or invalid ? Yes or no ?

Considering someone else as a beginner and yourself as a teacher as to why you're right and why he is wrong- is an appeal to authority or an argument from authority. You are a teacher or not- I don't know. I am a beginner or not- you don't know.

Vex Man - A simple question to you- is an unsound argument valid or invalid ? Yes or no?

It could be either.

Unsound arguments can be split into 3 sets:

  1. Valid; with 1 (or more) false premises.
  2. Invalid; with all true premises.
  3. Invalid; with 1 (or more) false premises

So an unsound argument could be valid or invalid.

You've done it again, premise 2 started with the word if, thus the argument is not that premise 2 is true, merely that the conclusion rationally fallows only if premise 2 is true.
