Christian Republicans, who falsely believe that the United States is a nation founded by and for Christians alone, have been silently working to establish Christianity as America’s official religion.
Right Wing Watch reported last month that the Republican National Committee has been consistently partnering with the American Renewal Project, which is headed by anti-LGBT extremist and Christian nationalist David Lane, who is also closely associated with the influential and powerful far-right American Family Association. In an email recently sent out to supporters of the American Renewal Project, Lane reiterated his agenda to establish Christianity as the country’s official religion.
“The American church has lost its commission in the public square, its purpose for being. Ultimately, unless we find the chart and compass used by Colonial America to establish Christianity as the official religion of America, America will no longer be,” read the mail.
In his email, Lane made use of a lot of misleading and false information to suggest that the United States is a Christian nation and should also adopt Christianity as its official religion. Lane also railed against secularism and its advocates in the same mail, making it rather evident how unaware and unwilling he is to accept that America is in fact a nation that was founded upon secular ideologies. However, his ignorant views have not taken critics by surprise, as Lane is notorious for having made offensive and factually incorrect statements in this regard.
Below, are a few examples of similar statements that he has made in the past:
“The separation of church and state is a “lie” and a “fabricated whopper” used to stop “Christian America – the moral majority – from imposing moral government on pagan public schools, pagan higher learning and pagan media.” [6/6/13]
“We were established as a Christian nation, for the advancement of the Christian faith.” [1/30/15]
“Vote to restore the Bible and prayer in public schools or be sent home. Hanging political scalps on the wall is the only love language politicians can hear.” [7/17/13]
“While America was a Christian nation since its founding, now it must choose between being a Christian nation or a pagan nation.” [7/17/13]
The contention here is that Lane happens to be a rather influential person within the Republican Party who is also privy to a whole lot of support from several GOP officials. Earlier this year, members of the Republican National Committee were sent on an all-expense paid trip to Israel that was organized by Lane and funded by the American Family Association.
