As part of their annual charity drive, r/atheism is raising funds up to $10,000 for Doctors Without Borders who are currently helping those who fell victim to typhoon Haiyan in Philippines last month. The team is working in different locations on three islands to improve the existing health system and deliver medical care to those in need. According to official figures, the disaster killed at least 5,600 people and displaced over four million others.

Doctors Without Borders also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres, is a secular non-government organization that carries out voluntary work related to world health and provides medical relief to the impoverished without regard to race, religion and politics. Since they primarily depend on donations from individuals, governments and corporations for their activities, r/atheism is helping them raise some additional funds through online donations.
What is r/atheism?
R/atheism is part of the social media website Reddit that allows users with specific interests to post links of articles, images, audios and videos from all over the web so that people from different parts of the world can engage in discussions. On Reddit, users can also directly post their own compositions to a suitable page. For the sake of convenience, the website is divided into different topics also known as subreddits such as r/atheism, r/funny and r/science among many others. Every link on the site is open to comments and members can up-vote what they like and down-vote what they do not. A topic that has more up-votes acquires higher karma and is likely to show up at the top of a page so that it can be spotted easily by other users with minimal search. Over time, r/atheism has emerged as one of the most popular discussion forums on the internet where millions of ‘godless redditors’ meet every day to debate over issues related to atheism.

Atheists stress basic humanity. We don't need any mythical/superstitious deity telling us what is right and what is wrong. We know it, and when we need to do something, it is done without hesitation, without having to be bribed with a non-existent "Heaven!"
