Fox News Wages War on Atheism

Elisabeth Hasselbeck

For several years now, Fox news has been waging a war on atheism. Each year, Fox unleashes its Christmas extravaganza, wanting viewers to believe that they are the victims of atheists' evil attempts to take away their holiday and keep them from wishing each other "Merry Christmas.”

Now, Wednesday Fox News Host Elisabeth Hasselbeck has made the claim that Christianity should be kept in schools because Islamic militants are persecuting Christians in Iraq. "You know," she wonders, "in light of what's going on in the world and the persecution of Christians right now, how close do we want to get to eliminating religious freedom in the globe?" In other words, atheists in this country are the same as al-Qaeda or the ISIS in the Middle East. That is what they want their audience to believe without them actually having to say it.

Fox News, of course, is the Republican Party's media corps. You might expect a conservatively aligned viewership such as those who watch Fox News to agree with such an idea. After all, the conservative right is home to all the evangelical Christian factions out there.

But...

Not so fast! says CNN political pundit and self-proclaimed atheist S. E. Cupp. On a recent online video for Crossfire, she says she does not believe the “myth” that conservatism is hostile to atheism. "In fact," she says, "I'd go so far as to say conservatism is far more intellectually honest and respectful of atheism than liberalism has been."
Cupp says she believes that it is atheists who are saying that they are somehow disenfranchised or left out of the political process, but that that has not been her experience.

Evidence, such as that from Fox News seems to suggest otherwise.

I have had conversations with Cupp on the radio. She is a sweetheart, I admire and respect her, but her opinion "conservatism is far more intellectually honest and respectful of atheism than liberalism has been" is flawed.
