New Netflix talk show “Bill Nye Saves the World” started this week and the whole first season was put online. One episode titled ‘Sexual Spectrum’ mocked ‘gay cure’ therapy with a satirical cartoon skit featuring different flavors of ice cream, with vanilla ice cream demanding that all other flavors of ice cream become vanilla too. The vanilla ice cream obviously represents a straight Christian man and that’s where the trouble starts.
The Vanilla ice cream insists: “As Vanilla, I feel that I am the most natural of the ice creams, and therefore the rest of you should just go ahead and also be vanilla. It’s the one true flavor.” Apparently, being straight Christian is the only correct way of being. God forbid that someone is gay or anything other than a heterosexual conservative Christian.
Through the funny cartoon we can see a good point ice cream cones make. For example, attempting to reassure the flamboyant Strawberry ice cream, Salted Caramel cuts in: “No one can make you stop being Strawberry, Strawberry. You’re Strawberry!” They show that everybody should be proud of what they are and they want to foster tolerance between different ‘ice creams’. On the other hand, Vanilla ice cream shows intolerance and says: “Everyone should pretend to be vanilla until they no longer have the urge not to be vanilla.”
The cartoon has the happy ending, because, in the end, all the different ice cream flavors jump into a bowl together and maybe that ending is the guiltiest for attracting a huge amount of anger from the far-right and anti-LGBT lobby.
In comments, the video is attacked as “blatant propaganda”, while some resorted to homophobic threats. Several of the comments on the clip even included direct death threats aimed at Nye. One of them wrote: “I’m not sure if I have seen anything most disturbing than this shit. They now are making it look like is nothing, using cartoons and stuff in order to wash up the minds of the kids, this is embarrassing.”
Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro posted a video to his official Facebook page criticizing Nye’s analogy, noting, “There is no scientific basis for anything that is in this video… Just on a scientific basis, ice cream does not have genitalia.”
The contradiction is that Christians display their morality by sending death threats to Bill Nye because he was mocking Christian morality.
