How hard can it be to make a monster film? Place an insane guy with the hero of the film and add a car chase. But, The Ledge is nothing like that and that is what makes it all the more refreshing. The main struggle in the film is between a staunch Christian who has extreme beliefs and a freethinking atheist who just wants out. The Ledge is a one of a kind film, more so because it has an openly atheist hero as well as an A-list cast. While the film received mostly positive reviews, the few critics who did take offence to the film actually go on to emphasize exactly what the film attempts to portray – that some people are so intolerant of atheism that even one movie among thousand others can seem too much for them to handle.
While we do debate over big religion-oriented stories like terrorism, abortion and gay rights, The Ledge focuses on the dangers of religion in our day-to-day lives. The skillful writing and impeccable acting adds authenticity to the film – it is easy to relate to and every viewer is bound to take back something from The Ledge.
The drama comprising of six people splits open the explosive relationship that each of them shares with the other. As a final test of faith, or the lack of it, the believer challenges the non-believer to step onto the ledge of a skyscraper where the latter has to decide whether to save his own life or the former’s. Without faith, will the atheist be able to make this decision? Watch the film to find out!
