God on Trial is a 2008 television play, starring Rupert Graves, Antony Sher and Jack Shepherd. Frank Cottrell Boyce wrote it. The play takes place in the Auschwitz region during World War II. The play is based on an incident described by Elie Wiesel in his book The Trial of God even though Boyce refers to the tale as apocryphal.
While waiting their inevitable deaths at one of the worst concentration camps in history, a group of Jews set up a rabbinical court to determine whether god has violated the holy covenant and if he is the one who is guilty for their fate. Pondering over the meaning and modalities of their triage, presumably to live or burn, Jewish Auschwitz barrack mates, start a debate over how and why god would allow his subjects to suffer so miserably. The debate leads to a heated fallout between a father and his son as well. Eventually, the group sets up a thora court to argue theologically and consider practical opinions as well.
Reportedly, producer Mark Redhead tried to turn the story into a film for almost twenty years before approaching Boyce to write the screenplay in 2005.
