Chocolat (2000)

Chocolat Movie

Chocolat is an American British romance based on a novel of the same name and it narrates the story of a young mother Vianne Rocher who moves to the fictional village Lansquenet-sous-Tannes with her little daughter to open a chocolaterie called La Chocolaterie Maya.

Not only does Vivian open her shop at the beginning of Lent, but she also wears provocative clothes, refrains from going to church and has an illegitimate child. Despite being judged by others, the locals gradually begin to take a liking towards Vianne because of her friendly nature and her business soon begins to flourish.

That is when the village mayor Comte Paul de Reynaud begins to protest against her for tempting people during the time of abstinence. Even though Vianne continues to show nice gestures to those around her, her rivalry with the mayor worsens and he begins to threaten her life. Devastated, Vianne plans to leave, but she is met by a group of villagers who express their gratitude towards her for bringing in a change in their mundane and conservative lives. Vianne thus decides to stay. But will she be able to improve her relations with Reynaud? Watch Chocolate to find out!

Nobody could have imagined the impact that the striking Vianne (Binoche) would make when she arrived in an old-fashioned French town.
